Say what you want about 2011 (it hasn't been a great year for lots of people), but it could always be worse: Your personal problems could be aired out for millions to see. I'm not talking about your 500 Facebook friends, either. I mean millions around the globe. Consider, if you will, what I think were the two most scandalous divorces of the year: Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher's split, and the ridiculously short marriage of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. Which is worse?
Both couples' splits were high profile, no question. But personally, I'm more thrown off kilter by Ashton and Demi Moore's divorce. Sure, I sort of always wondered how long they'd last - but at some point, I think I just got comfy with these two. I thought maybe, just maybe, they'd prove doubters wrong and stick it out long-term. Hate that I was wrong about that.
Kimmy K and Kris Humphries' 72-day marriage (and really I use that term very loosely) was a total sham. Yep, it was a pretty wedding. Yep, Kim Kardashian looked lovely. Yep, she made bank on the affair - and she's making bank on the smouldering ashes of the relationship too. Ratings for Kourtney and Kim Take New York on E! are through the roof, as viewers tune in to watch the whole nasty Kim and Kris marriage unravel. So while I'll agree this whole bit is scandalous and very tabloid-rich, I still think Demi and Ashton's situation is worse.
Have you seen Demi Moore lately? Recent photos concern me greatly. Demi is scary skinny. She looks unhappy and withdrawn. In other words: She looks like a woman who has lost a great love and is going through a devastating divorce. This is real - this isn't some made-for-reality-TV fairytale hookup. Ashton Kutcher reportedly cheated on his wife. Yes, she's older and sure, the age difference made everyone wonder whether the marriage would last but like I said before, I think we'd all reached the point that we thought they were on solid ground. Perhaps Demi did too, before Ashton (allegedly) hooked up with Sara Leal.
My heart actually goes out to Demi Moore. Losing at love sucks. Having to deal with all of this in such a very public way is a pain I can't even imagine. Hopefully 2012 will be brighter for Demi. As for Kim, I have no doubt that she'll manufacture some new drama to keep everyone tuning in week after week.
